It’s pretty hard to choose our favourite Western Australian destination. We’re big fans of Scarborough and the Perth CBD, but the art / history / food / beer combination of Fremantle is hard to beat. Here’s just a few ways we love to spend our days in Freo:

The Roundhouse
Stop by the oldest building still standing in Western Australia which has 12 sides and was originally built as a prison. It’s now open to the public and you can also explore the tunnel underneath that was built in 1837.

Fremantle Prison
One of Western Australia’s most significant tourist attractions and the first building in the state to be added to the World Heritage List, the prison was previously built to house high security prisoners. Make sure you take a torchlight tour… if you dare. You can also take a tour of the tunnels below the prison built by the prisoners themselves!

Fremantle Arts Centre
Originally built as an insane asylum (sensing a trend to Fremantle’s buildings here?), the Fremantle Arts Centre is now home to artists in residence, exhibitions, courses and live music.

Cappuccino Strip
People come to enjoy this iconic strip as it is home to cafes, restaurants, micro-breweries and street performers galore.

Shipwreck Galleries
The Shipwreck Galleries are the leading maritime archaeology museum in the southern hemisphere, featuring original timbers and displays from shipwrecks from the 1600s.

Fremantle Markets
You won’t find a list of best things to do in Freo that doesn’t include the Fremantle Markets. You can shop fresh food, clothing and crafts at the over 150 stalls. Open Friday – Sunday, it’s a must-visit.

Under the Bridge Freo Food Trucks
Every summer the food trucks return to Fremantle under the East Street Jetty. There are 5 rotating food trucks every Monday, making it the perfect week-night dinner!

West End
Known as the heritage district of Fremantle, West End has recently been added to the State Register of Heritage Places. Shop, stop for a coffee or watch the container ships pull into Victoria Quay.

Freo Beaches
There are four beaches in Fremantle, but the locals love Port Beach and Leighton Beach, known for white sands, snorkelling and kitesurfing in the afternoons.

Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour
Stop for seafood on the Fishing Boat Harbour and enjoy a beverage from one of the many micro-breweries. The harbour is home to over 400 fishing boats and you can watch them come and go or get out on the water with a sailing tour or jet boat ride.
