If you really want to experience the soul of a city, take a tour of its arts and cultural hubs. While Perth was long considered a remote mining town, the city has really come into its own with a vibrant arts, culture, music and food scene – so much so, it was hard to narrow down our favourites for this post! We’ve rounded up some of our favourite cultural experiences in Perth, from street art to some of the oldest bells in the world!
  1. Check out the street art
In 2009, The City of Perth implemented a Public Art Strategy with the goal of making the city centre more engaging. As a result, street art culture has exploded and there’s barely a laneway, mall or park that isn’t adorned. You can plan a tour of some of the best the city has to offer via the Streets of Perth Urban Explorers website which details which streets are a must-visit.

  1. Head to Yagan Square
Named for Aboriginal Noongar leader Yagan (1795-1833), the space is home to green spaces and wildflower gardens, markets, events and public art. Depending on what’s happening around the city, the Square plays host to DJs, food trucks and pop ups galore. Check out their Facebook page for the most up to date list of what’s on while you’re in town.

  1. Get Down at The Bird
If live music is your cultural scene, The Bird is the spot for Perth’s up-and-coming musicians, DJs and live bands. They also run short film screenings and art exhibitions regularly. Check out the Facebook page for more.

  1. Explore the Museum
Okay, so it’s not quite finished yet, but the WA Museum is going to be quite the destination when it’s completed in late 2020. The new building will be three times the size of the old museum and will marry historic structures with something state of the art. If you’re planning a holiday in the next few years, be sure to give it a visit.

  1. Get your game on at The Nostalgia Box
Would you technically call it cultural? Perhaps not, but we love it anyway! The Nostalgia Box is Australia’s first and only video game console museum featuring over 100 consoles from the 1970’s to today. See if you’re still as good at Pong, Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Crash Bandicoot as you were in your childhood!

  1. See one of the largest musical instruments on earth – The Bell Tower
The Bell Tower is not only one of the most popular Perth attractions, it’s also one of the largest musical instruments on earth. The tower was custom built to house the bells of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields Church, the parish church of Buckingham Palace which date back to before the 14th century. It’s the only place in the world you can view bell ringing in action and even have a go at ringing the bells yourself.
